Find TestFlight testers for your iOS app.

TestFlight makes it easy to hand a beta build to anyone with an iPhone. The hard part is the anyone. Here is how internal and external testing differ, what Beta App Review expects, and how to find iOS testers who open the build and tell you what broke.

Internal vs external testers

  • Internal testers: up to 100 people who are members of your App Store Connect team. Builds reach them right away, with no review. Good for your co-founder, not for strangers.
  • External testers: up to 10,000 people, invited by email or through a public link. The first build of each version goes through Beta App Review, which usually takes a day or less.
  • Builds expire after 90 days, so a long beta needs fresh uploads.

Email invites or a public link?

A public link is the quickest way in: anyone who opens it on their iPhone can install the TestFlight app and join, up to a limit you set. The catch is that you don't know who they are, and people who find a link on a forum rarely say anything.

Email invites take a minute more but tie each build to a person you can follow up with. Getting through Beta App Review

  2. 2If the app has a login, give the reviewer a demo account in the review notes.
  3. 3Make sure the build does what the description says. Placeholder screens and crashes on launch are the usual rejections.
  4. 4Once one build of a version is approved, later builds of the same version usually go out without a full review.

What iOS testers should check

  • Install from TestFlight on an actual iPhone, ideally not the newest one.
  • Permission prompts (notifications, camera, location), and what happens when they tap "Don't Allow".
  • Sign in with Apple, if you offer it, and the "Hide my email" address.
  • Dynamic Type at large sizes, dark mode and the smaller screen of an iPhone SE or mini.
  • Backgrounding the app and coming back, and killing it mid-flow.
  • In-app purchases in the sandbox, if you have them.
