How to find beta testers who actually test.

Getting people to say yes to a beta is easy. Getting them to open it, use it and tell you what broke is the part that fails. Here is where beta testers come from, how to prepare so they don't bounce, and how a reciprocity model keeps them showing up.

Where beta testers usually come from

  • Friends and family: fast and kind, which is the problem. They rarely tell you it's confusing.
  • Your waitlist: the best testers you'll get, if you have one. Most early products don't.
  • Subreddits and Discord servers: a few replies, and your post is gone by tomorrow.
  • Paid testing platforms: reliable, but priced for companies with a research budget.
  • Other makers: people in the same position as you, who will test yours if you test theirs.

Prepare before you invite anyone

  1. 1One link that works: a production URL, a TestFlight or Play invite, or a staging site.
  2. 2A brief: what the product is, what you want tested, what you already know is broken.
  3. 3Access: a demo account or a coupon, if there's a login or a paywall.
  4. 4A deadline: "within a week" gets done; "whenever you have time" doesn't.
  5. 5A format for feedback: a list of problems, each with where it happened and how bad it is.

Why reciprocity keeps testers engaged

On Makers Wall, testers are makers with their own project in the queue. Testing yours is how they move theirs up, and you rate their report when it's done, so skipping the work or writing two lines costs them.

Each tester picks a window of a few days when they claim your project, submits a report with every problem listed separately, and you accept it or ask for changes. If a tester disappears, the slot opens up again for someone else.

How it works on the wall

  1. 1 · SubmitPaste your link and write what testers should look at.
  2. 2 · TestClaim someone else's project and write down what broke. That's what moves yours up.
  3. 3 · ReceiveMakers test yours and send a report, every problem listed with its severity.
  4. 4 · RateYou rate each other; both ratings unlock together.

Free, and based on reciprocity. The FAQ has every rule written out.

Questions

How do I find beta testers for my app?
Submit your app on Makers Wall and other makers sign up to test it. They go through it, write down what broke and send you a report. Testing other people's projects moves yours up the queue, so the more you give, the faster your testers arrive.
How many beta testers do I need?
Five testers find most of the big usability problems in one flow. Start with 3 to 5, fix what they find, then run another round rather than inviting 50 people at once.
Should I pay beta testers?
You can, but for an early product, an exchange often works better: other makers test yours while you test theirs, and both sides have a reason to write a real report.
